An idea of what Ocala Florida’s weather is like from month to month

Ocala Florida weather March 2010

The winter of 09/10 will be one of the coldest on record here in Ocala. The weather guy on the TV station I watch says it is one of the 5 coldest since they started keeping records in the 1800’s. It seems every day has been 10 to 15 degrees below normal. Winters in Ocala are usually a great time of year with temperatures in the low 70’s. This year the low 60’s were the norm.

March is the beginning of spring here in Ocala, although this year is off to a slow start. Temperatures in March should be in the mid to high 70’s, the grass should green up and the azaleas should start to bloom.

Ocala Florida weather February 2010

February in Ocala is the last month of our winter. By the first of March things will start warming up, the grass will start to green up and the azaleas will bloom.

Temperatures in February should be in the low 70’s during the days and the mid 40’s at night. Of course January should have been like that too.

Hopefully February will be a more normal winter month than January. The first 10 days of the new year were extremely cold. Every night was at or below freezing which is unheard of here in Ocala. Now we do get frosts and freezes in Ocala but only 3 or 4 times a winter. Never 10 days in a row. A life long resident told me that he has never seen such a cold stretch in his 45 years living in Marion County. In addition to the cold weather it has been really rainy too. This is supposed to be the dry season where it doesn’t rain for weeks on end. It has rained so much I’ve had to lower the water in my pool several times.

Ocala weather for January 2010

January 2010 weather has started off the new year with freezing temperatures. It’s not unusual here in Ocala to get a hard freeze. In fact we can get 4 or 5 a year. However this year we have had an entire week of temperatures where the days stay in the low 50’s and the night time temps hover around freezing. From what I’ve seen on the TV weather there is a high over Texas and a low south of New England that combined is some how funneling cold air down to Florida that belongs much further to the north.

Any way January temps should be around 70 with night time temps down to around the mid 40’s. See my Ocala Weather guide on my web site for a chart of highs and lows for every month of the year.

Winter in Ocala only lasts about 8 weeks. By the first of March it’s spring here in Ocala.

This is my 5th winter here in Ocala. I moved here from Maine where it gets seriously cold. I was worried about the summer heat, which is now no problem. Now I don’t like it when the temperature gets much below 70. People are very adaptable.

Ocala Florida weather December 2009

The weather in Ocala Florida during the winter revolves around cold fronts. Most of the time the temperatures will be in the low to mid 70’s. Then along comes a cold front and the temps drop to the 60’s during the day. In the evenings after a cold front Ocala can get the occasional frost or even a lite freeze. We get several frosts a year which is why we have different plant material than you find further south in Florida.

Ocala Florida Weather Update November 2009

The temperatures are finally returning to normal after an exceptionally hot October. October temperatures were in the mid ti high 80’s instead of the lower 80’s all month. It was also pretty humid most days, more like September than October.

November should be in the 70’s during the day and the 50’s at night with no humidity. Hopefully this will turn out to be true. I think October through the end of December is a great time of year. You don’t need AC or heat and no humidity. In Ocala we look forward to the winter months.

I have a new Ocala Weather page on my web site with average temperatures and rain fall for all 12 months.

Ocala FL Weather October 2009

So far this month the weather here in Ocala has been unseasonably hot.  The day time temperatures should be in the mid to high 80’s but we have been in the 90’s almost all month. Several days have actually recorded record highs for the date.  It  has also been unusually humid for October, more like August.

October should be the start of the dry season. It should be in the mid 80’s during the day and around 60 at night. Most of the humidity should be just about gone too.

The beginning of winter and the dry season is my favorite time of year. You can leave the doors and windows open and not pay for the AC. It’s a great time to do projects in the yard too.

Ocala Weather Update September 09

September is still the summer in Ocala and not at all like fall as in other parts of the country.  It’s still plenty hot and plenty humid. Towards the end of the month the heat will begin to back off a little. By that I mean the high 80’s instead of the mid to low 90’s.

Here we are in September, at the peak of hurricane season and for the second year in a row, nothing is happening. Why do experts make predictions anyway when they are so wrong so often. Ocala is one of the least hurricane prone areas in Florida but the remnants of hurricanes provide a lot of scary wind and huge amounts of rain. In that sense I’m glad we’re having such an uneventful season and I hope it continues.

August was much wetter than in past years. We had several years of low rainfall and this year is back to normal. By that I mean afternoon thunderstorms on a regular basis. Some of these thunderstorms can drop 2 or 3 inches in less than an hour. I’m not kidding, I’ve had to lower my swimming pool several times to keep it from over flowing.

Remember as I love to say, the hot summers are a very small price to pay for no winters. I look forward to the winter.  Do you?

Ocala weather August 2009

Ocala weather in August is pretty much the same every day. Never below 90 and never above 95 in the day. Never below 70 at night and more like the mid 70’s. It’s humid all the time and there is a possibility of a thunderstorm almost every afternoon.

We are having a very uneventful hurricane season so far this year. Let’s hope it stays that way. In case you haven’t read my weather reports before this one, Ocala is probably the safest place in all of Florida for hurricanes. That’s not to say Ocala will never get one but that it’s unlikely.

As I always say, don’t let the heat and humidity bother you, it’s a very small price to pay for no winter.

Ocala Florida weather for July 09

The weather in June here in Ocala was wet. The past few years we basically had a drought during the wet season. It’s not that it didn’t rain in past years, it was just drier than it should have been. This year we are back to normal. By normal I mean showers in the afternoon on a very regular basis. I had to drain my swimming pool twice to keep it from over flowing.

July will probably be much the same as June. Highs in the 90’s, lows at night in the mid 70’s and plenty humid. Interestingly there seems to be little or no tropical storm activity out there so far this year.

As I always say, the heat and humidity of Florida summers is a very small price to pay for no winter.

Ocala Weather June 2009

Before getting to the weather in June here in Ocala let’s look back at May. May was one of the rainiest months of May on record. That’s a good thing because May is usually very dry and the Ocala area has had a drought.

June is the beginning of the wet season. In the afternoon winds from the Atlantic collide with winds off the Gulf causing instability in the atmosphere resulting in thunderstorms.

The humidity also returns to Ocala in June. The temperatures are in the low 90’s almost every day and the night time gets down to only the mid 70’s. There is no doubt about it the air is very humid.

June is also the beginning of hurricane season in Florida. Although the ocean water really isn’t warm enough yet to really get hurricanes going. Ocala, being in the middle of the state is one of the least hurricane prone areas in all of Florida.
