An idea of what Ocala Florida’s weather is like from month to month

Candler Hills January 2016

December 2015 was the warmest December that I’ve experienced since moving to Ocala in 2014. I had to turn my AC numerous times during the afternoons to cool things down I even had to run it at night a few times ! If you’ve read my past weather reports you know I look forward to certain months like December because I don’t need either heat or AC and save on my electric bill. I’m a frugal Yankee !

January is the dead of winter here. The cold weather has arrived with highs many days only in the 60’s. Last night we got a light frost and a few plants will die back to the ground. Winter only lasts until mid February when it starts to gradually warm up again so it’s really not all that bad.

November Was an unusually warm month with temperatures in the mid to high 80’s. That’s about 10 degrees above normal. It also rained more than usual in the beginning of the month.

December is a great month in ocala ! Temperatures are in the 70’s and the air is dry. As you can see from the picture of my tangerine tree it is also the time of year to harvest citrus. My tree looks a little ragged because I had to prune a lot of fruit off to keep it from breaking the branches.

If you don’t look forward to the winter season like I do then move to Ocala ! The long hot humid summers are a small price to pay for no snow or ice.

Ocala Florida weather report for November 2015

It’s been a crazy weather year so far here in Ocala. As I write my monthly weather blog here on November 3rd we are having record heat. Temperatures are expected to approach 90 today. All of October was the same with temps in the high 80’s all month long. Fortunately some but not all the humidity has gone. Normal for October is the low to mid 80’s and November we should be in the mid to high 70’s.

I suppose I shouldn’t complain. I talk to people from all over the country and they love to tell me how cold it is where they live. Like I always say the long hot humid summers are a small price to pay for no winter. Winter in Ocala is like early October in most northern states.

Ocala Florida Weather Report for October 2015

The summer of 2015 was unusually wet and cloudy even for Florida. Although summer is the rainy season that usually means afternoon thunderstorms. This summer had a huge number of days that were over cast and cloudy which is not the norm at all.

October is still a summer month in Ocala. Although it does start cooling down that just means the 80’s instead of the constant 90’s of June thru September. The humidity also begins to fade away and it’s the last month of hurricane season too.

Ocala Florida Weather Report for September 2015

August was another rainy month here in Ocala. People who grew up here will tell you that this is more a return to normal and that the past several years have been very dry.

September is a full blown summer month with temperatures still in the 90’s and plenty of humidity. It will not cool off until later in October. Once again we are not seeing much for hurricanes. That’s because dry air from Africa keeps hurricanes from getting going in the Atlantic and high level winds are tearing the ones that do get started apart. Let’s hope that continues.

Ocala Florida weather report for August 2015

Normally the summer weather here in Ocala is pretty predictable. It will be 90 every day with a chance of afternoon thunderstorms. Normally it’s sunny all day with an afternoon thunderstorm 3 or 4 times a week that lasts for an hour or two and back to sunshine. The summer of 2015 has been different. I have never seen so many days where it rained all day since I moved to Ocala in 2004. I’ve also never seen so many cloudy days. It’s normally sunny every day for at least part of the day. I haven’t seen the flooding here in SW Ocala like they have had down near Tampa but there might be some in other parts of Marion County. Let’s hope things return to normal soon.

August is also the first serious month of hurricane season. Hurricane season technically starts in June but the ocean water doesn’t really heat up enough until August. Ocala is one of the least likely areas in Florida to get hit by a hurricane but I watch the news and keep track of them any way.

Thunderstorms in Ocala Florida

I heard in the past that central Florida is the lightning capital of the world. I just read that it is actually in Africa. There is a area that stretches from Tampa to the Space Coast that has more lightning strikes than any where in the US. Although Ocala is a little north of that area we get serious thunderstorms and lightning is a real problem.

My personal experience with lightning was 3 or 4 years ago. A huge blast shook my house so much so that I went outside in the pouring rain to look for a hole in the roof. Seeing nothing I went back inside. A short while later I went to the garage and saw the clock for the irrigation system in the middle of the floor. A bolt of lightning hit the ground in the back yard. It got into the wires that lead from the sprinkler clock to the control valves. The electricity followed the wires inside and blew the clock off the wall. Then it traveled into the house wiring and blew up my desktop computer in my home office on the opposite side of the wall. I learned my lesson and now have every electronic device in my house plugged into a high quality surge protector. I also have a surge protector on the electric meter to protect the major appliances.

Ocala Florida weather report for June 2015

It has been an unusually warm dry spring at least where I live in SW Ocala. However June is the start of our wet season. There is a little humidity in the air and we’ve had afternoon thunderstorms the last couple of days.

June is also the beginning of hurricane season. Every year I say the same thing. Ocala is one of the safest places in Florida for hurricanes. That’s one of the biggest reasons that I moved here myself. As far as I can determine Ocala has never been hit by a hurricane. In 1968 Gladys passed close to Ocala knocking down a lot of trees. I moved here in 2004 when the remnants of 4 hurricanes with tropical storm winds hit Ocala. There was a huge amount of rain and a lot of downed trees but that was about it. Here in SW Ocala near the 55+ communities I didn’t even lose my power.

Ocala Florida weather report for May 2015

It’s been a crazy spring weather wise here in Ocala. March and April were exceedingly warm. Many days being a good 10 degrees above normal. The first few days of May have actually been cooler than many days in the two previous months. We have also had quite a bit of rain for the dry season and a little humidity as well.

In a normal year May is a transition month. We move from the dry season into the wet season. The temperatures heat up to the high 80’s and low 90’s and the humidity returns.

Ocala Florida weather report for April 2015

March Azalea in bloom

It has been an unusually warm spring here in Ocala. As soon as March began we had temp’s in the 80’s. That is unusual as March begins kind of cool in the low 70’s normally. As the month went on we had numerous days in the high 80’s which is about 10 degrees above normal. If you follow my weather blogs you know I’m not happy with these warm temperatures. There is nothing I hate more than using the AC in March ! The warm weather has continued into April with more 10 degree above normal temperatures. At least it’s not humid yet. The humidity usually holds off until mid to late May.

I realize you folks that still have snow on the ground have little sympathy for my complaining about the warm weather. If you can’t take another snowy winter then call me, email me or use my Dream Home Finder. Remember my unconditional guarantee. If it ever snows at your new Ocala home I’ll come over and shovel your driveway for free.
